I worked with Olivia when she was in the Queensland Theatre Co.’s marketing team and Cam is a theatre technician when he isn’t being a rock musician. One of the highlights of their wedding was seeing how excited and moved Romany and Cheyenne (Cam’s two little girls) were. It says good stuff about them all as people and as a family.

Gracie and Kun's wedding spanned three days, two countries and six months; One hot overcast day in Australia before last Christmas, plus two hot and steamy days in Singapore a few weeks ago. The wedding photography gods had smiled again. A special thank you to Margaret too.

3.25pm and the hairdresser was still twirling and fluffing and spraying, etc,etc.. The ceremony was for 4pm and twenty minutes away in New Farm with friday afternoon traffic factored in. What can i do? Nothing because as a photographer who is more interested in the dynamic nature of events than set ups , a tight timeline wasn't an issue for me. Donna and Brett were after a photojournalistic approach not a "fashion" shoot ... so no problems, I just kept clicking.

I shot a wedding a month ago and I fell in the fish pond to everyone’s amusement. In my defense it wasn’t where it should have been, i.e. sunken into the floor in a room behind a couch … go figure.
I landed on my feet but I spent most the afternoon shoeless. Every time I go to organize the photo’s to post about it, 100 other things come up. So until next time here’s a wedding I’ve prepared earlier, it’s another third anniversary so many happy returns Marnie and Simon. They were married in the backyard at Casurina beach just north Byron Bay on a day made for black and white photography. Those that aren’t b+w are in natural watercolor hues, and again I’m happy to let the photographs tell you the rest.

I usually avoid thinking of the wedding I’m about to photograph, but driving to Kristy and Steve’s it was different.
On the way through Tewantin I called in on a friend who I hadn’t seen for 30 years. She is the mother of a family I stayed with sometimes on school holidays and our lives were loosely entwined for pretty much all my teenage years. Rose showed me a photo album full of old photographs from the seventies and eighties. Amongst them where ones that were either washed out, contrasty, faded, scratched or out of focus. It’s funny though, they all had the same transporting effect and all bought up palpable feelings of long forgotten times and places.
Afterwards as I headed down to Perigian I thought that’s exactly what I want my wedding photo’s to be about. That humble little photo album packed so much emotional wallop and it reconfirmed with me the choices I make and priorities I have when shooting a wedding (and afterwards during editing). In thirty years I don’t want anyone looking at wedding photo’s I’ve taken and say “wasn’t the photographer clever, look how perfect everything is” or “what beautiful light”. I’d much rather they say affectionately to each other “look at us, that’s how we were”. Don’t get me wrong I value good technique and love stylish portraiture, but if I’m not getting the real stuff too, then it’s a missed opportunity.

It’s good top have Plan B. Sometimes that is nothing just not Plan A. Luckily Jacob and Kim had one when the sky over the border ranges turned black. The boys carried the Chuppah (Jacob had made) up the beach and across the road to a restaurant.
The storm spent itself by the time of the ceremony shrouding the remains of the day in a dreamy mist that came off the sea.

Just wanted to let you know that we have recieved the cd of all the photos. We cant express enough how much we love them. Everybodies personality shines through, and we feel like we are re-living the happiness and fun of the day everytime we look at them. And we cant stop! I have no idea how we are ever going to pick photos to put in an album, let alone to frame, we want every single one of them.
I have already showed heaps of friends and family, and everyone that sees them wants to know your website and contact details, as it seems that what you do is what everyone wants. One person, a friend of my cousin, said that they are the most beautiful wedding photos that she has ever seen, and she had worked in the industry!
Honestly, we knew your were good, but we had no idea how blown away we would be (in some photos, literally!).

Late last year I blogged about Kate and Ricky’s wedding at the Villa Botanica in Airlie Beach. I was talking to Todd Hunter McGaw last week and he mentioned he had a wedding coming up at the same venue. It reminded me there was more to tell than I had previously posted. The groom was Ricky Megee which probably doesn’t ring a bell but it should. His story is staggering.
There is his book “Left for Dead” for the details, but basically he gave a lift to some people in the outback and after sharing a drink with them, wakes up in a shallow rock covered grave.
How he managed to survive being lost for 3 months on the edge of the desert without shoes or hat and nothing to drink or eat except what he can find, makes him a legend!, Yet this feat of brains and will power is virtually unknown .
Bear is good, but Ricky is the real thing!

Before things get too busy again I want put up some weddings from a while ago. This one was eighteen months ago and Christie and Jeremy had popped over from Dubai to get married in Byron Bay. They told me they didn’t want to spend all day smiling for the camera or posing but wanted to spend most of their time having fun. That sounded perfect to me.
It’s the second time I’ve posted photographs at the Byron Bay Lighthouse and it won’t be the last. It’s always different.
The wedding was at the Byron Bay Beach Resort which is now mothballed (as a wedding venue) and we got to the lighthouse just before sunset on a cloudy afternoon. A glider soared in the chilly updraft off the Capes’ 120 meter high cliff face, along with the bridesmaids’ hemlines. As the soft blue light faded the glider sailed back across the bay to Tyagarah airfield and we headed off to the reception.

As wedding photography is supposed to be about capturing memories I thought I’d test that again and show Georgie and Graeme’s wedding from early in 2007. The original plan was for them to travel with family and friends to Byron Bay from Melbourne. A few months out that plan was reversed and I ended up going down there. Not quiet Melbourne but across Port Philip Bay on the Bellarine Peninsula at Queenscliffe and a glorious winery called Spray Farm.

Syvanna and Richards’ second wedding anniversary is coming around, so I 've put these up to remember a really beautiful country wedding. Coorabella is an archetypal north coast property, a mix of tasteful eccentricity set amongst rolling green countryside behind Byron Bay.
Soon after their marriage, they both took extended leave from their jobs and went on an open ended trip around the world.

For some reason winter weddings aren’t as popular as summer one’s. It might have something to do with the fact most dresses are more comfortable in hot weather and blokes in suits just have to put up with it. The other thing is the weather is more settled in winter. Having said that Natasha and Warren snuck their mid-May beach ceremony in two days before an east coast low washed Marcoola beach away.

I first met Kellie when she was one and even then she had a sense of fun. Somehow she'd learnt to spray whatever she was drinking in her bottle by bending the teat over. Anyone in the room was likely to be hit by a stream of warm milk and when you looked over there was Kel chuckling away in her pram or high chair. She was cute then and she still is!! I've rushed this post as I'm away for the next week and I know old Frank would love to see some of these. Congrats Robbie and Kel, here's a random quick pick.

Outdoor weddings can be a gamble with the weather. Kellie and Brian were rewarded for taking the chance. Soft light, mild temps, a view forever and even some dolphins tuned up to take it home. Kate and Ricky got together with sixty people at the Villa Botanica at Airlie Beach. Everyone was from everywhere but the Whitsundays and everyone was totally awed by it. The Vila is an artwork and was a dreamy backdrop to a memorable day. We all have stories and I've found out a littte about one of Ricky's since the Wedding. You should do a search for the book "Left for Dead", it's a jaw dropping true story and the before and after photo's leave one sctratching one's head.

Shannon and Carl's wedding coincided with two other historic events. It was AFL grand final day, and Brisbane had it's second "once in a lifetime " dust storm in a week. Every aspect of the wedding was tasteful and chic c/- a Paul Hunt masterpeice and great locations, and lot's and lot's of fun. Mother nature ran amuck just after dusk as the city was covered in a "Bladerunneresque" haze.
